They would be the male versions of mermaids. I mean how else would the mermaids be there if there weren't the male versions of the species to keep it going.

Merman came from anglo-saxon (perhaps) language. Mere mean fish or something related to sea. Merman is a male version of mermaid. They just same as the mermaid. Mysterious, ugly(a kind of it), can't talk in the land, and charming but deadly.

Merman is referring to a male of the mermaid or sea nymph or nanaid species. The upper torso of a Man with the tail of a Fish. Think of Triton on Little Mermaid ;)

LOL this could be a dirty joke, but like the others, the first answer I thought of when I read this question was the male form of mermaid, the mythical half fish, half human sea creature.

Hint: mer translated into english is sea, you know like ocean?

Probably something like P.T. Barnham's FIJI MURMAID. This was actually the shaved head and neck of an ape sown on to a large fish to look authentic. It looked so intense, people paid to see it, even they knew it had to be fake.

Barnham felt so guilty about the fake, he apologized in the newspaper and gave everyone their money back.

A mermaid (or mermaiden) is a mythological creatures name used in fairytales or old shipmate stories to explain a half female half fish creature.
The same for a merman.
