Ok, so i just started working retail about 3 weeks ago and my boss is scheduling me for like 30 hours a week and i take 16 credit hours in school. I am falling behind really fast and I want to tell him that I can only work like 15 hours a week but i dont know how he will respond. He doesnt really get that college students are really busy and I feel like if I tell him that he will make me quit. Please help!!

The same thing happened to me in High School when I was taking work experience. It just means you are good at your job and they want to use you to the fullest. However, school must take priority.

In my situation I was a minor and 'dad' bailed me out and the boss reduced my hours to less than 20/week. Since you are an adult, you'll need to simply have a conversation with the boss. Just express that your schooling is important and the hours you are working is causing you difficulty and request 'between 15-20 hours/week' (or whatever you are able to do).

I feel confident they will keep you and reduce your hours because you are a valuable employee. If by chance they don't or won't... no worries... retail jobs are a dime a dozen. Keep your eyes open for other opportunities and make sure your hour requirements are made known up front.

Best wishes on both ventures... school and work.

(ps... I highly recommend getting an entry level position in the field you are majoring in - then you have shoe in and can advance as you get your education - before you know it, you'll have the job you want)

Don't tell him what you think about him and his not understanding, that will set you up for a bad outcome. You can tell him that this is all you can work for a set schedule and that's that. Or get a different job that will work with you. I don't know what your going to school for and what your work load is like but when I was in school I took 16 + credits and worked as well. You can do it but your social life does suffer. That's the compromise. But if you really don't need the money tell him you can't work there if he schedules you for more hours than you can handle.

If you have a small safety net look for another job and if you find one ask your boss to cut your time. This way you have fall-back.

Don't let your school suffer if you can help it.

be honest and upfront. What is more important to you!
If he doesn't come to an agreement that works for both of you, find something part time that is workable!
