I'm 16 weeks pregnant. I've been taking prenatals since I found out I was pregnant... I think I was four weeks then. My prenatal vitamins have 800mcg, but I heard FOLIC ACID is good from preventing birth defects like spinal bifida.... so I am taking extra 400mcg...so that makes it 1200mcg of Folic Acid everyday... Could that be too much and harm my baby... or is it okay.. My mom tells me to stop taking it that's why.... Did any of you ever take extra folic acid????

I take two prenatal pills a day, and my Dr. says everything is just fine. I also drink Ensure and Carnation Instant breakfast for the extra vitamins and energy.

I have read that there are no side effects of taking "too much" folic acid. I don't believe that you can harm yourself or your child. But with other vitamins like iron...you can make yourself really sick. (take it from me)
If you are taking a prenatal vitamin, i don't see why you should take anything extra, unless your doc tells you so.

Well ive heard that you can take to much of anything really,.even water..lol!..but the vitamins that they give u for pregnancy has just the right amount for the baby and you in them, i mean taking a "little" extra wouldnt hurt, but if i were you i would ask your doctor first before anyone..they know best when it comes to what to take!...

I am on 5 mg because I am taking a medication that slows my metabolism down but you cannot take too much your body will get rid of what you don't need...of course check with your dr but continue to take it, it will not hurt you...good luck and congrats!!

i believe my baby is a little genius due to folic acid :) and breastfeeding :)
