I have several tadpoles in an aquarium. In on side I have a divider that is not waterproof. I have piled up gravel and some large stones behind the divider. The top of the gravel is dry but underneath is soaked with water. I have a good filter running through the tank. But will stuff start growing in the gravel that is on the other side of the divider.

The lighting and the amount of water and air will definately be a factor when it comes to algea growth.
I would just take the gravel out once a month and give it a good rinsing in hot water, then cold water, NO CHEMICALS just to rinse off and kill any growth on the gravel. If the gravel is at the bottom of the tank just get a pleco, he'll take care of the substrate algea growth for you.

Make sure that the water is stirred in that area by a filter or powerhead which will prevent buildup.

It will on the bottom side of these rocks...& you also have to watch out for the weight of these rocks...it will cause stress on the seams of your tank...& possibly cause it to leak...

depending on your lighting.I would guess that it would be okay but if you're worried about it try to keep an eye on it.
