Is this a NEW computer or used? If it is NEW, it should not START in sleep mode unless "someone" has made some configuration changes. I am a bit concerned that this is a virus, as they cause computers to do strange things like this. However, if this is the ONLY thing wrong with your computer, you can make configuration changes by going (in safe mode, if necessary) to Control Panel, then click "power options" if Vista and I think XP says "power Management". Follow the directions.
A new computer should NOT run slow, and you want to Right click your task bar and click "task manager". Down in the left hand corner will be the number of processes. If this number is GREATER than 42, then you are either infected with spy ware or probably have too many programs running at one time.

How long does it take before it goes into sleep mode? You may need to go to your "system tools" and look at the "power options" tab. That will let you pick how long you want it to wait before going into sleep mode. You can turn it off or set it for a few hours. Those settings are usually default for energy efficiency and not burning out your pc or monitor.
Hope this helps.

For one, never buy a Compaq... Look in your settings (right click the desktop and select properties) click the screen saver tab > click the power button > adjust these settings.

Your Power Options may be out of whack.
Try Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options
Carefully review all settings there.

Start it in safe mode, see what your power saving settings are.
If all else, maybe something is pressing up against your computer's power button.
