To show him that he's grown up enough and to have an activity and moment that is exclusively yours that he'll remember for a very long time.I think you should take him to the pet store and let him pick it out. There's going to be bragging on his part to anyone who'll listen.Sooooo wouldn't rather him say my mom took me to the petstore and let me pick out my very own hampster.Over him saying my mom bought me this hampster.
Personalize it hun the memory will last alot longer and it'll be fun for both of you and a learning experience for both of you.Make sure to have the sales associate explain to him how to care for it.....Teach him responsibility by hearing it not only from you but from the people who take care of hampsters every day:)

Good Luck ANd Have Fun!!!!!

the surprise is nice, but to be on the safer side you should let him pick one out. Maybe tell him he has to go to the dentist or something, then take him to the pet store so he will still get a nice surprise :D

Take him to pick it out. That way he'll see all that there is to pick from. He can handle the ones he's interested in and get a calm one that will not bite. Goldens are the original colour but there are many, many other varieties. Have fun with this.

I had both experinces growing up, and I definately liked the one where I picked out my own better. You could make it a surprise by telling him he needs new underwear, or has a doctor's appointment or something and instead take him shopping for his hamster! That would make me happy if I was still a kid.

I would surprise your son with the HABITAT for the hamster (cage, water bottle, etc.) and then let him choose the animal itself. I've recieved pets both ways, and the ones I've chosen have always been more suited to me.

When you make your own choices, you're more apt to be satisfied with them in the end; this is especially important when asmall animal's happiness is at stake.

If Your Son Is Emotional Do Not Get Him A Hamster. They Last For About 2 Years !

surprises are the best! your son would probably not mind which hamster it is, he'd just be happy to have one! but if your son had been eyeing one hamster in particular, or likes a specific kind or look, then you should take him to pick one out. I'd stay safe and let him pick it out, just have the cage ready at home as a surprise.

hamsters generally don't like to be held so you may want to take him to the pet store so that he can find one that will be calm with him or so that he can pick out another small animal. two that are really good with children are rats and guinea pigs. both tend not to bite and can be quite playful.

which ever is easier in your life. i have 3 boys, and if i want to get them anything i have to surprise them with it, if i take them with me we never end up with what we were supposed to and we always spend way too much money. think about it, if you take him to pick it out is he going to want a bird (or any other harder to care for animal) instead? and then the pet has to be cared for at home, is it a pet you want to teach your son some responsibility with, or just for fun. can he handle it? just a few thing to think about. blessed be
