My husband has subscriptions to several magazines. BH&G, Country Living, Consumer Reports, & This Old House.

I really want to clean off my shelves and put things away, but I can't because he insists on keeping all of his magazines on the shelf. He has a hard time throwing the old ones away. Now, I can see keeping CR and TOH, because they have great information in them that can be used for later, but the others are just clutter. He has about 2.5 - 3 yrs of them on the shelf. I have in the past gone through and thrown some away and he always gets really mad.

Soooo, how long do you keep old magazines around? Which ones and why if you do.

i am so glad someone else has this problem. My boyfriend has a big problem with throwing them away. He keeps motor bike and quad magazines and thinks that he might use the info in them someday. I ignored it for a while but i also had no room left and he would and has got so mad at me for throwing them away. My solution he bought magazine boxes (you can get them at comic book stores) and he stores them out of my site (in his shed or garage) and by making him go through them he actually threw some away himself!
Hope this helps

Once the Consumer Reports Buying Guide comes out, I make my hubby give away or recycle the issues covered by the last one. On all the other interior design magazines, including TOH, Veranda, Sunset, Country Living, etc. (we get a lot), we go through them every quarter and tear out the pictures, articles and instructions that we think we might refer to in a future project and put them into files. We have a garden & landscape notebook, a craft file, maintence and repair notebook, woodworking projects, kitchen & bath, and we keep adding more. It helps us stay organized and we don't have to sort through a ton of past magazine issues to "find that article about..." Once he got used to the system, he actually likes it better because in the middle of a project we can lay our hands on whatever we need much faster. Plus, it is all kept together in a convient location.

Probably keep the magazines around about 1 yr; I would keep the BH&G, Country Living , and This Old House, but it depends on the content thats in them to how long you should keep them. If there is just useless information, then get rid of them but ask him before you do.

I read them and throw them away or give them to friends. I can't stand the clutter. If there is an article that is really good that I don't want to let go of for future reference, I'll save it in a file.

I'd but him a new bookcase and organize them by title and date. A nice thought for your hubby, too.
