Because they were scared of Martin O'Neill - too clever by half, and too reminiscent of his mentor Cloughie - and Phil Scolari didn't need the hassle.
And also because no English manager has yet won the Premiership, so there weren't exactly many candidates beating their door down.

ABSOLUTELY NO FRIGGIN CLUE!! He is the definition of the term "bang average"!!!!! nothing about him but he is a very very very safe choice and the FA is very very very very scared of being blamed for anything at all or taking a risk so we have to watch very very very very boring lifeless soulless gutless less than mediocre harmless pathetic uninspired football!! its great being English!!

Because their first choice, whose name I can't remember, didn't want the job. And McLaren's cheaper and he was Sven's no2 but obviously learnt nothing.

He learnt excellent tips on blaggin interviews and payrises from the frustratingly average Sven Goran-Ericsson. And the F.A. already had a name plate for him they could move to the bigger room.

He's pretty much a 'yes' man, the FA wont have much trouble with him, thats all they're worried about. No controversy, no arguements, no answering back, NO GOOD.
