Wars are part of human nature, as we will always want what somebody else has, and will kill them to get it. This will remain true as long as our species is alive, regardless of whether we're deemed "progressing" or "regressing".
The fact that Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith are cultural icons is a testament to the decline of western civilization. Our society, as a whole, is more interested in the sultry details of a fallen pop tart and a former stripper than in science or history. We hold poorly-educated entertainers in higher esteem than our top scholars. We play violent video games instead of reading. We just assume what we need to believe, because that's what the TV told us to believe.
Finally (and sadly) the rest of the world has it's own fascination with American culture. They gladly follow our path, because we tell them what is "cool". Fortunately, there will always be independent thinkers, worldwide, that will not be swayed by the influence of mass media and hysteria, and they will be the ones to drag us from this disappointing age in human history.

The fact that you are able to ask this question and getting the whole world to see the question and answer it is a technological marvel. The asker and answerer do even know who and where each other are from.
Today with computers, telecomunications and the Internet, we have bridged distances like never before. It is with info technology that we are able to get info nearly instantly as it happened, (incl Anna's death and its aftermath). It is with info technology that the world become smaller, closer.
We also take cars, aeroplane, airconditioners and other creature comfort for granted, and arenot available 100 years ago. These are the things that our forefathers never get to enjoy. Also are the health standards worldwide with solutions for diseases that were never thought could be cured.
Wars, terrorism? It has happened since the Stone Age, probably on a grander scale because there was no effective governments. Heard of the plunders of Genghis Khan who conquer much of Asia to parts of Europe, Napoleon and many other empires that rose and fell, causing untold miseries to the peoples of both the victors and the victims? World Wars 1 & 2 happened not too long ago and brought sufferings worldwide that are remembered to this day.
Yes, today we have some serious terrorists that bring down two towers in New York, bombed trains in London, Madrid, New Delhi and elsewhere. And a war in Iraq that seems to have no way out. But these are sporadic happenings and in only certain troubled spots. It is a world that is still relatively at peace. People are still talking at United Nations. Most nations, big and small, and conducting trade, not wars.
So, is the world getting better or worse ? You decide.
P.S. By the way, I am from Asia, and is puzzled at why Nicole Smith's death has attracted so much attention in the West. The rest of the world is not fascinated by it, and do not necessarily follow whatever reported in the American media with interest. I personally do not care what happened to her.

You have to be kidding. We are at the most peaceful time in world history (as a % of the population at war), with the highest levels of education, health, freedom and wealth the world has ever seen.

Depends on your view, I guess. The Optimist thinks these are the best of times and the Pessimist is afraid he is right.
