My son broke both bones in his forearm and has been in a full cast for 9 weeks. He will have the cast removed next week, and I am concerned about his handwriting. He is in second grade and the class began cursive while he was unable to write. I have asked the public school for OT to help remediate him. They want to have a child study to evaluate if he needs a 504. What information can you give me that will help when I go to the meeting?

Is your child having physical problems due to the recent fracture affecting his ability to perform academic tasks or is he just behind because he was unable to begin cursive writing with his fellow students? If his muscles/coordination skills are weak due to the break and lack of use etc. then the OT has a necessary role in helping your son to strengthen his arm and regain some coordination. While working with your son to address this physical deficit, writing could be incorportated into the treatment to support classroom goals. If your child's arm is fully healed and functioning well and he is just behind because he was not able to participate in the writing lessons with the other students, then maybe you and the school could work together to arrange some tutoring before or after school to help him get caught up.

A 504 program is for students who don't qualify for special ed but have a doctor's note about something that may require extra remediation. You will need documentation from the doctor, hopefully stating what is needed or what he recommends.
