As someone in the healthcare profession I highly recommend you be caught up on your immunizations! Not that Egypt is somesort of cesspool of virus and infection but simply because it's a good preventative health measure. However, legally you do not really need to get any immunizations befor going. If you will be staying longer than 1 month then there are immunizations and such that must be done to extend your travel visa. Do, however, keep in mind that no matter where you travel there are bateria and viruses that the local population is used to and often gains immunity to through childhood illness. These bacteria and viruses will not be ones that you are likely immune to. If you contract a virus or are exposed to the wrong bacteria your immune sytem will be weakend and you will be more suceptable to other illness and disease. If you have had your shots at least you know your body will be less likely to contract those more dangerous diseases. There are still live cases of many threatening diseases in Egypt so take care of your own health. I've been to and lived in Egypt with my husband (who's Egyptian) and I always made sure to have my vaccines up to date whether it was required or not. If you decide not to vaccinate yourself at least make sure you follow standard safety precautions for foreign travel. Avoid the local water and make sure you drink only bottled water. Avoid local fruits and veggies washed in local water. Eat everything well cooked. wear insect repellent (there is a risk of malaria, many will say it's only in one spot of Egypt but the reality is that mosquitos can fly and could travel to any part of egypt even if most cases are localized, it's better safe than sorry). Also wear lots of sunscreen, apply 20 minutes before going out and re-apply every 2 hours to protect your skin. The sun is much more intense in Egypt than most parts of the US (you should actually do this no matter where you live or travel but ...). So, short answer is you don't need them but I would highly recommend getting them to maintain health. With tetanus you never know where you might end up stepping on a rusty nail or something that contains the bacteria... it's universal. Immunizations are important no matter where you are and an aids test is somewhat usefull if you have had multiple sexual encounters but may seem a little useless if you've been with the same partner for several years. Check travel advisiories and the CDC for up to date information and recommendations.

I think if you are even wondering if not getting these things done might ruin your trip or you might not be able to enter Egypt, than if i was you i would just go ahead and get the immunizations- just to be sure you have every thing covered and there will surly be no problems. Also I'm sure you are a smart person and you probably know what you are doing, but... i am a little scared for you because i have heard so many negative things about going to Egypt, even being killed or tortured, and i heard that they HATE Americans and do not trust us.. of course i don't know if that's true, but it's scary to hear those things. Good luck and PLEASE be careful and safe. I would love to go, if i was more brave ;)

When i went to Egypt i didnt get any shots at all. I ended up living there about 7 months. I was also told i would have to have an aids test before leaving (anyone there longer then a month and then going back to the USA has to) But i never had one.
Good luck.

You don't need immunisation before you arrive here. Just you need to know about customs and the culture before you come. It's completely different, so you should be open to accept negative things as positive. It's more safe than USA and you can feel that in Cairo at night specially. It's the city that never sleeps. Just try to know more Egyptians here and read many answers you'll understand many things.
I'm Egyptian against Bush, Israel and violence. At the same time I welcome all normal visitors from all over the world. Read some answers here from Americans who visited or living in Egypt.
Welcome in Egypt

I would think that you would need some vaccines...I suggest you call your local government (county) and they can give you the number to the department that is in control of travel immunizations....good luck and have fun

you may consult the Egyptian Embassy in US , or you may email the American Embassy in Cairo or the American University there , just to get absolute facts about what you may do actually. However, I think that you may not bother so much.
