You really should speak with a doctor. You can go to planned parenthood. They will not have to involve your parents, and you can get birth control at a good price and sometimes free. to go.. www.plannedparenthood.com ... and find a clinic near you. They will explain everything to you, and how long you should wait to have sex.

Also, a good way to ask your parents is say you want to try it to help acne. If you don't have acne, I starting using birth control to regulate my periods and to help with menstrual cramps. I had horrible periods! Think about it. It would be better if you parents knew anyway.

The best birth control is abstinence...but since you're asking I'm assuming you're not interested in that.
You should use two forms of birth control: a chemical one like the birth control pill (which takes a month to become effective) and a mechanical one (like a condom) to protect you from disease.
If you decide to become, or already are, sexually active, you should do so with the notion that you must be responsible, meaning go for yearly Pap smears and STD checks and get vaccinated for HPV.
The fact that you put three question marks after "I also want to know how long should I take it before having sex" makes you sound really anxious--don't rush into it. A bad choice sexually can ruin your whole life, and I don't just mean pregnancy.
I would make an appointment with Planned Parenthood, because they do a good job of educating young people about ther sexual choices. They also provide birth control and yearly checkups at a really low price!

I would say abstinence, because 17 is very young. Yet, I am glad that you are thinking responsibly. I would recommend the depo provera. You receive the injection every 12 weeks, and it is hassle free. You have to be comfortable with not having a regular period. You have to keep in my mind all birth control may have side effects. If you think you can remember to take the pill everyday at around the same time, than the pill would be great. The pill has a lot of great advantages. You also have to take in consideration your medical history. Talk to a doctor and they will give you your options. What ever you chose make sure you still use condoms.

Hi there :)
the best thing you can do right now is to see your gynaecologist - he or she will give you the best advice how to protect yourself in sake of safe sex.
You may be suggest to take some pills (those are very safe nowadays since they contain very small dose of hormones- some of the pills can even help you with skin problems if any - like acne), or some mechanical protection like condoms combined with creams etc. if you have sex only occasionally.

Rely on the specialist advice.
Anyway I'm very proud of you that you care about birth control and safe sex.

OK ... there are alot of different birth controls. If you can't remember to take pills get the shot or the patch. If you are going to be having sex get on some birth control a.s.a.p. You can get it at the Dr's office or a teen health center.

It really depends on you...some pills contain more of one hormone, and depending on the user, it can make you sick. You'll have to talk to your doctor of go to Planned Parenthood. Birth control pills take about one to two months to work, so start as soon as possible, or if you can't wait, make sure he wears a condom.

You have to find the best one for your body and your schedule. And after starting it, it can take up to a month before your body gets use to it so abstain from sex or make sure to use protection for at least a whole cycle or 2.

No matter what chemical birth control you use, use condoms as well. Chemical birth control won't protect you from diseases, and you have no idea where the other person "has been".
