According to the experts who profess to know "the secret" it is because we feel deprived and that there is "not enough" in the universe for everyone. I live by the 10% rule, always leaving 10% of my space to receive and always leaving behind 10% of what I think I need, want or desire so that new things can come into my life. The thought behind accumulation is that if we let it go, we will be without when in actuality we make room to receive more. You will find it helpful to sort through what you have accumulated and find new homes for the items you don't use, don't like or don't want any longer. Once you do, you will be amazed at how much new stuff comes into your life.

Man, do I have this problem! LOL
I'm a multi-media artist. So there's all kinds of materials hanging around here!
But, so far, I always get around to using something that's been hanging around for last 20+ years. Let's see, the other day it was copper sheeting that I've had since 1985. That stuff's expensive now! Then I needed a jumper for a new computer toy, haven't needed one for 5 years, but dug around, found the little bugger, and fit it in.
On other things, like clothing and other misc. items, I AM getting better. I drop off the good stuff at Goodwill -- OFTEN!
BTW, George Carlin has an old routine on "People's Stuff". If you haven't heard it, seek it out, it's a riot!

I suffer from this malady myself. The most frequent feeling I have when, halfway through the forward elivery to the trash can my arm freezes, is that I always feel I'll have a future use for even the oddest object I'm attmepting to free myself of, and I'll have to buy another.
My grandfather had the same disease, although he had a valid reason--he was raised during the depression in a family of 12, and had nothing. Perhaps this is beahvior I learned from him.
