Patriotism has limits! Patriotism does not say be a suicide bomber for your country. Patriotism applies to wanting to support and make your own country a better place. Patriotism is a healthy thing to have. Fanaticism is often misunderstood. Fanaticism is an absolute obsession with something to the point that it is the most important thing in life. It is very unhealthy to be a fanatic of anything except a fanatic for the Lord!

I would define patriotism as a love of and pride in one's country in general, with the willingness to defend and improve it without sacrificing the freedom to criticize it as well. If you're using fanaticism in the same country context, I'd define that as anyone willing to either kill or remove the civil liberties of others in the name of said country. As Benjamin Franklin once said, "He who would sacrifice liberty for safety deserves neither."

Patriotism is more of a way of thinking and believing and being proud of your country.
Fanaticism is taking the law into your own hands, and not caring what you do is patriotic, or terrorism.
