they may be lying, at least to themselves. At the very least they have no credibility.

They could be lying, it depends on if they have represented themselves as believing X. I think one can "go through the motions" as if X were true to gain more information and this is not in and of its self a lie. If one must actually lie in order to do this, that is different.
i.e. if someone were holding a raffle and you didn't believe they were actually giving out the prizes, you could buy a ticket as if you believed they were, just to see what would happen if you won. However, if you were required to state that you believed the raffle was legitimate in order to participate, then you would be lying if you falsely stated your belief.

What is X? X can mean any thing? People can say they believe in X and act as though they don't believe in X too. It can work both ways.

best way to discover a person's belief or lack thereof is to create cognitive dissonance. a person cannot act contradictory to a held belief/principle. s/he will either change behavior or belief/principle. Create tension between what is done and what is expressed/believed...it's like placing a mirror in front of the person.

hey it's a way to persuade a person in a arguement as well.

i wouldn't say a person is lying maybe ignorant (and i don't mean this in a derogatory way)

In this life that we live, most of all, we need a kind of attitude that in able us to see things clearly. Most of the time, actions are better than words. Many believe that they don't know yet, but unaware that they live on it. ' I don't believe I am good.' One may says. But he lives justly. Or the other one said:' I am not a lier!' But unaware of doing so.

The contradiction in saying and acting may be generally due to personal or social compulsions or due to taking precaution, apart from lying to hide the belief, as you mentioned, due to fear .

I think they were lying because true belif brings positve results. When we beleive anything even without even testing it but on trusting our instincts , it will honestely work. I personally beleive in this stongly

an essential part of becoming who we are is to test, question and educate ourselves about our beliefs. making a statment of belief should really only come with the absolute feeling that u know, but it doesnt mean u cant change your mind, as we learn and experience new things our beliefs are often strengthened or changed, it is not really a lie

Not necessarily. Maybe they were only acting (as if they did believe X).
You only know what you believe if you are honest with yourself. Your actions won't prove it and neither will anybody else.
