Really bugs me. Im a typical 17 yr old, at college, with a nice appearance and nice ways, yet i ride horses for a hobby and am hoping to get into uni this year. I go to parties occasionally. I have mates in all walks of life, at work, next door, at school and at the stables, so i feel i have loads of friends and am pretty happy with myself i guess. But why is it that some people think that just because i dont spend my fridays and saturday nights on the streets or in some club getting drunk i dont have a social life? Charming. All my brothers words of course. I love a party now and then, and i do go out with friends now and then also. Sometimes i wish i went out more, but really i cant be bothered, im ust trying to make myself look like someone im not. Im choosing to spend tonight inside, with a nice warm fire and getting my school work done. I do want a future after all.

Am i some kind of geek or what? Does a 17 year old always have to do what everyone else does at that age?

Be yourself, not everyone is a party animal but more the 'village idiot' if you want friends just be yourself and dont do what others do. getting a social life is easy u just gotta behave yourself and dont play the fool..

Unfortunately many people like you and I struggle with this. You HAVE a social life! You just don't have a socially acceptable social life. Everyone thinks they have to get drunk and be stupid to have a social life. That is just not true! I found one in college, and I started a group that was not about that stuff. We would have sensible fun playing games and reading together on Friday nights.

You are no geek! I also think that the first person who invents an idea for a good time that does not involved getting plastered will be a millionaire!!! There are more people out there like you and I than you probably think! Keep your head up!

You are not a geek. You are what is called 'normal' and well adjusted. I think that those people who feel they have to get plastered every weekend (and some weeknights), aren't happy with themselves and have to go out and try and get approval by other drunks and perhaps catch a disease and have several kids by several different men. A bit harsh but I see it and hear about it every day.

All I ever seem to see are people your age and mostly people a little older who seem to think that they are the bees knees just coz they went out on the weekend. Big deal. Where is that going to get them in life? Their lives are pretty sad. Drinking themselves into oblivion EVERY weekend. Damaging their bodies. It starts to get pretty old listening to people rave on and try and brag about what they did on the weekend and try and outdo each other. Those sorts of people seem to be airheads and would never have read a newspaper or watched the news and have no idea about what's going on in the world. All they seem to care about is their nails and fake tans and the foils in their hair.

I say good on you. I wish there were more people in this world like you. People with substance.

I don't begrudge people going to parties and having fun but it's not the be all and end all and there is more to life. And just because you don't do that, doesn't mean you don't have a life.

Keep it up. In ten years time you will be 'someone' with lots to be proud of and they will still be puking in the gutter as someone else put it.

Im so glad I find your question! I feel the same way as I am your age and I don't really like to "party". Most people I know always get drunk and go to clubs and parties. Sometimes I just like a night in, that doesn't mean you don't have a social life. You don't have to go out every friday and saturday night. You do what you want and you don't have to go everywhere other people go.

I agree with you. I was the same way in College and after College. I went to a party now and then, but not all the time.

Do not let your brothers push you around. They are succumbing to peer pressure and bringing that to you.

Do what makes you happy, because in the long run you have to worry about you. Your brothers will not be the ones upset that you did not do well in school and cannot get the job that you want. They also will not remember how many parties you attended in College.

Take care,
Troy

You do have a social life. Your hobby is your social life. Just because you dont go out every weekend and end up puking in a gutter.. it doesn't make you unsocialable.

You said it yourself that you are happy with your life and have lots of friends. Don't worry about what your brothers think.. Brothers will just say that just to stir you up.

If you love your life the way it is now.. why change it.

Forget them kid; believe me, when you get older, you aren't going to be like "Gee, I wish I spent more time getting wasted in some bar and feeling like crap in the morning."

It sounds like you have plenty of friends and good hobbies, and that seems to be to be a great social life.

People who make fun of others or press others to be like them are actually the ones with low self esteem and feel that they are inadequate.

Keep up with the school work so you get a good job, make the money, and hire the drunk to do your lawn.

(Man when did I get old?)

You go girl! Don't follow the crowd. Shows you have your own mind and not a follower like most people.
