How to get started in the Publishing industry?

I am interested in becoming a novelist, and am wondering where to get started once I have a manuscript ready. Do I sent my manuscript to publishers, where do I find an editor, etc. Help!

The first thing to do is find a "literary agent" but very few of them will take an unpublished author.

So try writing articles for the local paper, and magazines. Once you are in print, it gets a little easier to land an agent.

Also you need to learn how to do a query letter and a sample chapter - you cannot just send your MSS without an introduction.

Also try asking around - someone you know might know an agent.
