I'm 21 weeks pregnant (today) and I noticed I'm gaining weight in my butt too! not just the tummy ..
I've heard that with boy pregnancies you tend to gain weight in the butt, hips, and thighs as well ... is that true? is the baby weight harder to get off?

first time mom and curious :)

Thanks!

Haha! Yes, it's common! I actually enjoyed having "curves" I had while pregnant. All I've gotta say is slather your whole body with lotion! I used both cocoa butter lotion and regular lotion to prevent/minimize stretch marks, and I made out pretty well. Different bodies gain weight differently, and pregnancy weight gain isn't only from Baby! I've only been pregnant once with a boy, and that's where I gained weight. It came off in less than a year with breastfeeding and a healthy lifestyle. Weight gain is absolutely necessary in pregnancy, but be careful not to use it as an excuse to eat tons of junk food! Stay healthy and enjoy your pregnancy!!!

Where the Weight Goes
7.5 - 8.5 lbs Baby
2 lbs Amniotic Fluid
1.5 - 2 lbs Placenta
1.5 - 2 lbs Breast Tissue
3 lbs Blood Volume
2 - 2.5 lbs Uterine Muscle
4 lbs Water
8 lbs Maternal Stores

Your body's hormones cause you to add fat to the butt and many other places, storing up for labor, breastfeeding and the months of sleep-deprivation after. The baby weight is not hard to lose, but you will never lose those nice curves now. They are the mark of womanhood and maturation. That's why they are so sexy to men, there is an instinctive attraction to the look of a woman who has had a baby. Breastfeeding uses a lot of enrgy and can help with weight loss but you spend so much time sitting that you do have to be careful not to over-munch (also a problem with bottle-feeding, but there is less energy use). Your abdomen will be poofy for awhile because the muscles need time to shrink down again. There is no statistical difference in weight gain or where the weight is gained between boys and girls but I know there was more spreading in the hips and butt then I would have liked with my two boys.

Those are old wives' tales. I'm 26 weeks with a boy and my weight is all in my tummy. I can still fit into my jeans...but they won't button. I have to use the hair elastic trick. It all depends on your body and your genes.

My sister had 3 kids (1 boy and 2 girls) and she gained it all in the butt and thighs. It has been hard for her to slim down in those areas, but she also works full time and attends school part time while raising her children (my brother in law is a lazy bum!). I recently gave her a pilates video so hopefully that'll help her out a bit.

Even if your body changes drastically after your baby, remember that you'll always have a little baby who loves you no matter what!

I've had 3 boys, and I've learned that you can't always rely on what people say about boys carrying this way and girls carrying that way. My third son carried completely different than the first two, and exactly the way a girl supposedly carries.

As far as the weight distribution, I've always gotten extra baggage in the butt/hips/thighs. By the end of my pregnancies, I couldn't even fit my stretchy "that time of the month" underwear:(

And as for getting the weight off, I had no problem with my first two, and even lost weight beyond my pre-pregnancy weight. Since my third, however, I'm finding it pretty difficult. Apparently that's normal, though, to have trouble after the third.

I just had my son on Valentine's Day (my first also) and I can definately testify that I gained a lot of weight in the butt. I didn't really have much of a butt to start off with, but by 12 weeks, I was already in maternity shorts (it was summer) due to my expanding butt. I started off a size 2 prepregnancy, and never really had to wear maternity pants as I carried him like a basketball in my shirt and I could wear low-rise jeans and they would buckle below my belly. However, I did end up going up to a size 8 at around 8 months. After that, when he dropped down, I had no choice but to wear maternity pants. I ended up gaining only 24lbs during my pregnancy, and he was 8lbs6oz of that. I left the hospital weighing 1lb more than I did prepregnancy. I can say that my butt INSTANTLY went away. May sound crazy, but underwear that my butt seemed to be exploding out of during pregnancy now is loose and floppy and looks like I am the one wearing the diaper. If you're concerned about getting the weight off, breastfeeding helps. I am hungrier now that I am breastfeeding than I EVER was during the entire pregnancy. I had to go back to the doctor yesterday, and once I got on the scale I have already lost 3 more lbs since the birth. It could just be me, but a friend had a son one month before me, and she has experienced the same things whereas another friend who had a girl in Decemeber still looks about 5 months pregnant. Maybe coincidence, I don't know.

I'm 27 weeks with a girl but i'm gaining weight in my butt too! In fact, I have NO stretch marks on my belly at all...but just recently some popped up on my butt/hips...

And it's true, you're very likely to gain weight in the butt, hips and thighs...it's a part of pregnancy but don't worry about shedding the pounds until after the baby comes and you get the OK from your doctor to start dieting and excercising.
Good luck!

It's a wives tale that you expand more with boys, because the old saying is that you carry boys low, like a basketball and you have to compensate for the weight. But everyone is different I've had boys and girls and carried them all that way.
The weight is hard to get off period but no more so than anyone else.

I am 19 weeks pregnant, with a boy too. My husband says "Baby got back!" Lol! I have the same "butt" problem that you do.

Seems to be a trend, but who knows....

Congrats on the pregnancy! I'm a first time mommy too and are really looking forward to meeting our baby.

you gain weight everywhere. Getting rid of the weight after pregnancy is not hard if you do the right things. Just give your body time to heal and then start excerising. Sometimes you can get lucky and not gain that much
