My wife tried this, and she gave birth to a black baby. (We're both white.) It was something to do with the melanin of her and the fetus.

The salon I used to go to had a contract you had to sign and it specifically stated that you couldn't tan if you were pregnant. I believe it was because of the heat thing. I either wouldn't go or I'd only tan for 15 minutes at a time so as to be sure you don't overheat. I don't even break a sweat in 15 minutes. I am not sure how much heat reaches the womb though. You might be better off just asking your OB their opinion as I'm sure you're going to get mixed answers on here too. I guess you could always go to a salon that does that spray-on tanner. I've never been to one though so I don't know how good or bad it looks.

Yes, working at a tanning salon is absolutely fine. Just be careful though. I used to work at one and know that you have to wipe down the booths before another person enters it so if your the one doing that, make sure your not breathing in the chemicals or be sure to wear a mask if you absolutely have to do it. Also, as odd as it sounds and just as a precaution, I wouldnt do it but my sister-in-law was told that she was able to tan once a week during her pregnancy. I dont think they want your body temperature to rise, but the UV lights only change your top layer of skin. They cannot effect the baby.

I dont believe it is a safe thing to do. In a tanning salon, it gets really hot raising your body temperature as well as the baby's. Its like giving you and the baby a temporary fever. If your not supposed to go in a hot tub, or take really hot baths, why would a tanning bed be any different? Thats what I think.

There are no studies that provide conclusive evidence that tanning beds directly harm your baby. Most health care providers advise against any activity that might raise your body temperature, such as saunas or tanning beds. Overheating is associated with spinal malformations in the baby. Some studies also link UV rays and folic acid deficiency. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, and is especially important in the first trimester. During pregnancy, your skin is more susceptible to burning and chloasma, the dark splotches that appear on the face during pregnancy.

I do rarely and only for 15 minutes at a time. UV rays aren't radioactive. Nothing will harm the fetus. But yes, just remember like you said, not to overheat or overdo it. As long as you keep that in mind, I think you'll be fine~ Good luck!

The best thing to do is ask your OBGYN...they know what they're talking about...it's great to get advice on Yahoo Answers but it should not take the place of your doctors instructions.

I would recommend holding off on tanning while pregnant. Use some sunless tanning spray instead.

No No No. Not ok! You overheat your body! Its the same reason you are not supposed to go in a spa or take over hot baths.

It IS ok to do the spray tan thing. *Mystic Tan*. If you must be tan, do that instead.

Magda...you shouldn't be going to the fake & bake anyway...hello Skin Cancer???

Why would you risk yourself or your baby...quit already mamma.

YOU WANT TO HEAR "yes it's safe do what you want"...BUT IT"S NOT...I wouldn't even use the tanning creams...anything soaks into your skin and makes you change colors...probably isn't great for the baby.

Focus on health and fitness while you're preggo...Pregnant women are already beautiful...no cooking required!

uv tanning still isn't the best thing to do when you're pregnant, sometimes, on a rare occasion, it does penetrate the skin and it does harm the fetus. try spray tanning

Yes, tanning is OK as long as you do not get to hot. It is the overheating, not the rays that are bad for you. I went tanning during both of my pregnancy's, and my kids are fine, my pregnancy was normal. I just covered my belly, and only stayed in a cool bed for 12 min.
