I have a computer downstairs and one that I would like to connect upstairs. I have a netopia router/modem downstairs but the cord is not long enough to connect it upstairs. Can I just use the other modem that I have to connect the upstairs computer?

I think you need to go wireless.

It's possible. If both computers have traditional modems, you can connect the two modems together. You'll need to build the crossover wire to connect them.
If you have the tools to build that wire, you'll be able to build a long-enough patch cable to connect the upstairs computer directly to the router.
I agree that wireless is your best solution. You'll just need a wireless card for the PC and a wireless bridge/switch to connect to the router with a patch cable. Make sure you enable wireless security and change the password to prevent someone driving by from hijacking your connection.

No Modem is not used to connect tow computers.
instead LAN cards are used.

Modem is actually used to convert digital signal into analog and vice versa.
And it is needed when we used telephone network to connect two pcs.

As you are not going to use telephone network. Your computers can be simply conncted with a wire plus LAN cards in both computers.

It is actually called LAN (Local Area Network) to connect two or more local computers.

So to connect your computer you need LAN card as a hardware and LAN server/client setup.

So you next logical step of learning is .
HOW TO Setup LAN?
and Has you LAN cards in your pcs?
if not do so now.

How about getting a bluetooth adapter.

There is some home network kit that you can buy at CompUsa that will let you connect home computers using local home phone wiring. That's made by IBM and cost 50-60$
