I watched it last night, and loved it, but was hoping to get other people's opinions about what statements it was making, what was the underlying theme?
Thanks!

I saw "Babel" and also liked it very much--maybe not the best film of the year, but certainly deserving of the nomination.

To respond to your question, I pose to you an inquiry of my own: Among all the main characters in the movie, who were the ones who had it the worst in the end?

All the characters went through terrible ordeals, but in the end, half of them are going to make it, while the other half are absolutely ruined. Can you guess which characters belong to which group?

The young married couple, played by Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchett, experienced quite an adventure, didn't they? In the end, however, they survived with their marriage and upper middle class lives intact. Also, it's evident they will be one the most popular and admired Americans in the media for awhile.

Their Mexican-American housekeeper was not as fortunate, on the other hand. After her terrible ordeal, she lost her job, her comfortable life, and her U.S. citizenship. She got deported, and no one will shed a tear for her (except perhaps her closest friends and relatives).

What about the family of the two Arab boys who accidentally shot Kate Blanchett? They had it the worst, in my opinion. As we saw in the film, their lives were devastated because of one tragic misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, the affluent Japanese man, who was the origin of the whole mess, is more worried about her deeply troubled daughter than the lives he ruined with his hunting rifle.

Why should he lose any sleep about that? In the eyes of the law, it wasn't his fault; he didn't pull the trigger. Besides, he was much too preoccupied with what was going with his daughter, who was going "Britney Spears" and flashing her "thing" out in public, to even notice what was happening in some remote location in the Middle East.

Do you see what I'm getting at? The major conflicts facing the privileged elite in the film are related to family, parenting, marriage, and coping with loss. Basically, the turmoils faced by the privileged characters in the film are social and psychological in nature--the concerns of the modern masses.

While the problems faced by the impoverished and underprivileged characters were that of plain survival. They had to go through their turmoils alone, without the support of the law and the government.

Needless to say, I probably could have responded to your question more properly and articulately, but hopefully I gave you something to consider.

There are many themes to ponder about in the movie "Babel." One thing worth thinking about is the issue of class distinction in our global community.

Immediately after seeing the film, a friend of mine made this humoruous remark: "The Mexicans got screwed."

I smiled after he said that, but then, I realize that there might be some truth to that.

The whole film to me was about the language barrier on our planet. As with the Tower Babel from the Bible, it was languages which were their main fate.

Brad Pitt did an excellent job and so did the young Japanese girl who gave an amazing performance. Great film all round and along with 21 grams and Amores Perros gives the director, 3 of the greatest films ever made.
