Today CNN showed a 18-wheeler toppled over on a passenger car in Florida (which is 100s of miles from where I live). On other broadcasts I have seen them cover fires in Atlanta (where their headquarters are) that have little interest to me. Is it interesting to other people?

And don't turn this into FOX vs CNN... I have seen this kind of crap on FOX too. I just want to talk about the content on these stations, not political viewpoints.

To me, it is very annoying when they have these "breaking news" events interrupting a show I was watching. There is a certain instinctual fascination with watching an emergency in real time, but it has no real value.
I could see some merit to reporting crashes and car chases on the radio, because they may affect driving conditions, and people listen to the radio while driving. But they don't.

Should they: No

Will they: Sure

If it is a big enough fire or crash with lots of smoke and blood, they would be stupid not to cover it because the viewing public are a bunch of sheeple who clamor for all things gory.

I haven't watched a local stations newscast in over a decade because I really don't need to hear about a:

Fire in local neighborhood
Car crash in a local neighborhood
water main break in a local neighborhood.

My question is; are there any neighborhoods that aren't "local" to someone. And is this really "news"?

I, like most people weened on the web get my news from the rich and diverse news feeds, blogs, and viral media. If the big nationwide cable guys start acting like the local guys, there will only be tabloid television with zero content.

Well, most TV stations are large conglomerates and the news is brought in by satellite, so they can't really cover local news very well.
If we de-centralized the media and brought back local news, we wouldn't have this problem.
