I'm sorry, but cheap and good never go together in the same line. You can get cheap or good, but not both. If you want a reliable router, then Linksys is the only way to go, as once setup, they just work. As far as securing your router, you mean you want to use WPA (WAP = wireless access point)? WEP was the encryption scheme included with the first generation of wireless networking equipment. It was found to contain some serious flaws which make it relatively easy to crack, or break into, so it is not the best form of security for your wireless network. WPA was later rolled out to provide significantly stronger wireless data encryption than WEP. But, in order to use WPA, all of the devices communicating on the network need to be configured for WPA. If any of the devices in the chain of communication are configured for WEP, the WPA devices will typically fall back to the lesser encryption so that all of the devices can still communicate.

I have a Linksys and it works great. I think it is the best of the "home" routers but they do seem to cost a bit more. I don't know much about D-Link or TrendNet...never owned or used either brand.

I bought a cheap Trendnet router back in October 2006, had no problems setting it up, been running it ever since. Just boot the devices in the correct order (modem first, then router) for the router to get the WAN IP address from the modem.

Linksys is owned by Cisco (cisco seems to think they run the internet), but they do make a quality product, kinda set it and forget it etc..

Netgear and D-Link and Linksys are all equivalent in brand and technology. Trendnet is super cheap.

Your best bet is to get on newegg.com, and use their search features to narrow down to what you think you need.

then read the customer surveys, sort by most bought etc.. and buy the one w/ the most reviews but the fewest negative reviews etc. that fits into your budget.

Expect to spend ~45-75 for a decent one that can be used to front a High speed cable network.

regardless of you wired connection speed if you get a cheap router like some of the linksys one go for like $50 you might only get like a 54mbps connection over the air, my suggestion is spend a little extra cash and get the D-Link - RangeBooster N Wireless-N Router you will 108mbps rate it run on a 2.4 ghz frequency and you have 64/128 bit wep increption and key authorization

I would recommend you the Linksys WRT54G. This is a highly reliable, secure and configurable wireless router. I've seen many small business using it and getting good results. I believe it can be found in ebay.

Use Linksys, it's easiest to set up. Plus, it's a Cisco product so you can assume it's secure.
