With the growth of professional wrestling (which refers to WWE, TNA, and other similar companies) in the late 70's and into the 80's, these companies market the product to hook children into watching their programming. The marketing model hasn't changed much but what has happened is that a lot of the children from the 70's and 80's are now adults that continue to watch the product. These adults even sucker their children into watching with them as a bonding ritual. What is silly about watching it now is that MOST adult fans understand that it's all very contrived and realize that the outcomes are predetermined, yet something about that connection to our childhood still keeps them watching. It is similar to they way adults still watch sports like baseball and football and connect that with their own childhood experiences. it not everyone's cup of tea and it's your prerogative to disagree with people that do watch but essentially it serves as the "male soap opera." Watching Days of our Lives or General Hospital would be unmanly but somehow watching wrestling is acceptable. Especially in light of all the women that they flaunt on their broadcasts not as genuine wrestlers but as eye candy.

Well once upon a time i was a bored 5th grader one summer evening and i was flipping through channels and I stopped and saw a wrestling ring with Triple H beating someone up with a steel chair and there was blood...and being the freak that i was i frikken loved it!!!! Anyways i didn't watch it on a regular basis but i caught onto some favorites like Chris Jericho and Triple H back in the day. I don't remember how or when i stopped watching after a while and lost track of it, and then some years later when Smackdown switched to Friday nights, One Friday night my friends were all busy and i had nothing to do, so i turned on the TV and to my suprise Friday Night Smackdown was on. At first i thought it was stupid and didn't see why anyone including myself watched it but then everytime I didnt hang out on Friday nights i watched and got into the storylines again as well as the action. Now i'm hooooked!

historically violent sports have been the most popular. for example, the Romans poured enormous amounts of money into gladiatorial sports. we have an innate leaning toward violence and blood. what better way to enjoy than as a spectator. that way you don't get hurt.
