I've always been paranoid about someone being in my house while I'm by myself. I'm terrified of what could happen, if someone could break in and I'd be in shock and wouldn't move. I have a deadbolt and lock on every door, but I'm afraid it's not enough. Also, what if they break in through the windows? Is there any way I can get over my fear and what are some good ideas to make things around my house feel safer to me?

I think we sike ourselves up so much worrying that we make situations so much worse then need to be. a watch dog is a good thing if you are not in apartment. good luck sweetie

You need to 'desensitize' yourself ... and it is going to take a lot of time before you'll be able to 'feel safe' because to 'desensitize' you need to UNLOCK those doors and windows ... one at a time ... start by unlocking the 'front door' first, but keeping it closed and simply standing by the closed door for ten minutes before you can 'lock it up' again. The next day, do the same thing, but stand by that door for twenty minutes. The third day, for an hour. The fourth day, go sit in a chair in the same room. Fifth day, stand in the room 'next to' the room that has the door. Eventually, you can work your way 'through the house' leaving more doors and windows unlocked, until you'll eventually find that you have to 'remember' to lock those doors and windows at night. I know that it may sound 'silly' because I'm telling you to 'put yourself at risk' ... but this really will 'work' and you'll start to feel 'safer' by doing it ... because your 'safety' is best found 'inside you' and not in locks on your doors and windows.

There are lots of things you could do to FEEL safer, but at this rate the issue of safety or lack of safety is mostly in your mind.

--Ask the police to come in to evaluate your safety measures (ground floor apartment vs. top floor, etc.) If they don't do that, as them to refer you to a security/safety expert to evaluate your home.

--Consider getting an alarm system and/or a panic button installed.

--If you need to move to an area where the perceived level of personal safety is higher, then pack up.

--Get a roommate.

--Get a dog.

--Start a Neighborhood Watch program in your area.

--Take up martial arts or a personal safety class.

--Most Important: Talk to a counselor about the origins of/basis for your fears bc ultimately THAT is what's keeping you in this "dog chasing its tail" mode, terrifying you out of your mind, and making you miserable.

You can't continue to live your life this way or you will continue to have no life. You have to face your fear(s) and do what you reasonably and practically can to deal with them.

Just remember that whatever you do, wherever you go, THERE you are, carrying your fear with you.

So, stand and deal.
