Republicans wanted an united Ireland, free from any connection with the monarchy , whilst Nationalist wanted a free Ireland. Up to 1947 Ireland was still part of the Commonwealth, when the british King had an affair with Mrs Wallis Simpson, it was a great excuse for the republican party, Fianna Fail to completely break away from the Commonwealth.

The terms aren't used much nowadays, but Ireland is still called the Republic by many.

Both want Ireland re-united, but Nationalists are closer to what we would call 'conservative' - they want a restoration of Ireland's traditional government and culture. The 'Republicans' - as in the IRA - want to replace the existing government with a neo-Marxist state, with themselves in control. They bear no resemblance to the American Republican party.
