It's kind of like "California or bust" - do or die, go for broke. In Australia, Sydney represents the big city, and the bush is the lonely, dull, isolated outback.

I think I recall a Peanuts comic strip where one of the characters was encouraging Charlie Brown with a bunch of clichés like that, ending with "Sydney or the bush!" In the last panel, Charlie Brown was looking perplexed and repeating, "Sydney or the bush?"

I used to design travel brochures for Australia. A picture of the The Opera House is not inviting at all. It's iconic and fine for inside your leaflet but not for the front cover. A photo of Darling Harbour offers much more. It's located on the harbour, it's busy with pedestrians but at the same time very laid back. Alternatively, a photo of "The Rocks" area of Sydney would make an interesting cover shot. When you design a brochure you need to think about who your target market is. That is, who are you trying to sell this trip to Sydney to? Are they old folk or are they young and wanting a bit more energy and excitement? let me know if you get stuck with ideas.

The early settlers in Australia were convicts sent out from England to serve out their penal time. The settlement was at Jackson s Bay and beyond the settlement their was only the inhospitable Australian wilderness, or "bush" as it was dubbed. The first governor of the colony was named Hobson.

A convict had only two choices - Sydney or the Bush. Hobson s choice.

A saying that refers to big city or very rural options, i.e., "you have to choose to do it the urban way or the rural way." It can also mean no in between, one way or the other, etc.
