I don't understand the concept of how to do the top spin part, going from 7 o clock to 1 o clock. How can you swing upwards when serving.

To execute a kick serve, your ball toss must be different than for a flat or slice serve. Instead of slightly out in front of you, the toss should be just to the side (over the left shoulder if you're right-handed). This way, the racquet will be contacting the ball much like a slice serve turned on its side. It takes quite a bit of practice to get a good amount of spin on it, and I know when I first started I often made contact with the frame rather than the strings.

It's worth the practice though, as it's a high percentage serve; the topspin makes the ball dive down into the service box, you won't hit many serves long. If you're getting proper spin on it, the serve will jump up after the bounce, which will keep your opponent back despite the slower pace of the serve. I hope this helped, and good luck.

A kick serve is very good for a second serve because it puts spin on the ball making it difficult for the opponent to return it accurately and because it is more accurate.
First, instead of tossing the ball at a regular 1 o'clock position, toss it a little bit behind your head., more at around 11 o'clock.
Now holding you racket in the continental grip (volley grip, "chopper" grip) you hit the ball making it spin on your racket.
don't forget not to look down once you hit the serve, because then the ball will go into the net. and to snap your wrist for more spin assuring the ball will not go out.
I hope that helps!

as everyone else said, make sure your toss is over your opposite shoulder and slightly behind you. hit the seven oclock position on the ball, and flick your wrist through and make sure your racket leaves at the one oclock position on the ball. the power of this serve goes to spin, not speed. hit the ball as your racket goes up, and flick your wrist, and it sould get topspin.
