For him to be happy he will need a shaded area out of the light. Dietarially, they enjoy nibbling on wood in addition to their sinking wafers, but its not necessary. I've never had a pleco that didn't like driftwood, but for long term health, a shaded area to hide will go a lot further. It will reduce stress & lengthen his life.

Clown plecos could have some timber of their nutrition plan, some thing to do with the micro organism that stay of their gut. with out the lignun that they get from timber the micro organism that they choose for digestion at last die, they are able to't digest any nutrition, and die themselves. Will or no longer that is okay till at last next week, probable, yet you should flow to any interior of sight park, and p.c.. up some ineffective sticks which will act as driftwood. provide them a scrub, knock any loose bark off, and drop them interior the tank. superb to stick with hardwoods like oak, maple etc. sidestep Walnut, pine or cedar as they incorporate chemical compounds which would be poisonous in case you get adequate interior the water. New driftwood probable wont sink interior the tank, yet only set a rock on it to maintain it down. anticipate it to stain the water a yet brown while that is clean, yet it rather is innocuous. Ian

Yes, your pleco needs wood to have a happy, healthy and normal life. They need the fiber in their guts. Take out the plastic, painted or dyed anything and everything in the tank if you're even half serious about keeping the fish. They all leech toxins into the water. I didn't believe it myself until I volunteered at the animal care lab at my university, I thought "but its made to go into a tank" - yeah, well a bio and chem professor proved me wrong.
Only furnish your tank with things that would be found in nature, and your pleco certainly DOES need wood in there.

If you want to do the best for your fish, try to emulate his natural environment. I'm thinking that driftwood would be a normal part of his environment, and the large plastic ship, not so much.

I would get him a piece of wood. My pleco (a rhino) started scraping the paint on the decorations in my tank, so better to get yours something he CAN scrape safely before he damages your decor (you may want to consider taking the ship out anyway and go with natural wood and stone for decoration).

bogwood is beneficial in their diet. its important as it is part of the teeth grinding, roughage intake and important lignin they need.
so yes, i would get him some
remember to soak it in hot water for a week prior to adding it to the tank, this helps to leech out the tannins (which are harmless) that turn your water a yellow-brown.
