If you read the books and are a fan, yes, it is an amazing triology and it is everything fans make it out to be. However, if you haven't read the books, you may be bored to tears, especially in the second movie. The movies are beautifully made however. They were set in New Zealand so must of the background are real plains and mountians. The costumes are fantastic as are the actors who wear them. I would watch Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring first, to get a feel of the movies. Don't watch the extended edition unless you have about five hours to spare.
Rent it from Blockbuster and see if you like it. ^_^

Some people love it. Some people hate it.

If you like the books, I think you will like the movie because the characters and acting are excellent, and the special effects are fantastic. The story sticks relatively true to the books. They have to squash some things together to fit it all in, and they cut out some superfluous stuff, like the chapters on Tom Bombadil. But for the most part it is a movie that sticks quite well to the plot of the book.

And, thankfully, they do not dumb it down to a children's movie (like they did with the cartoon movie of the Hobbitt in the 1970s).

In my opinion they are awesome movies. I've heard some people say they were bored, though.

If you're talking about the movies, they're great. They did real justice on the books, too (didn't follow them perfectly, but fairly closely and were amazing). I would even suggest getting the extended version.
If you're talking about the books, they're good, too, but they don't go quite as quickly as some other books. They're a bit dark (with a depressing feeling a lot of the way because there is so little hope of success), but I really enjoyed them.

Excellent books, but a very hard read as peoples names changes so much. Make sure you read The Hobbit first

The books are great. Read the books then see the movies with all the video effect. I think you will enjoy it. You could see the movies first and the read the books, and enjoy it also.

is it good? If you like fantasy then yes, it is top notch. It beat out star wars without even trying. It is among the best if not the best trilogy ever made.

Depends on your concept of film art. If your favorite director is the Coen Brothers, Woody Allen or Ingmar Bergman, probably not...
