Interesting question. Is New York safe is what's really important. The possibility of Iran firing a nuke and hitting NYC and us not being able to intercept it, not very likely. We have THE best military in the world.

As far as a "dirty bomb" goes, any bomb wrapped with hazardous materials, i.e. nuclear waste, lethal chemicals, dog poo, or whatever, designed to explode and dispurse harmful material into the atmosphere is considered a "Dirty Bomb".

I'm a hazmat tech for a fire department and the chances of Iran getting a dirty bomb to NE United States is really not likely.

Nuclear bombs aren't nearly as scary as some things that are already here. A normal human being can be exposed to high level of radiation for approx. 15mins every 24hours without worrying about health concerns. Now, a human taking one breath of chlorine will kill them before they hit the floor. Makes you not want to go swimming ever again. Hope that helps.

Currently Iran maintains that it's nuclear program is peaceful and for atomic energy purposes only. This has been questioned by the united states and others. By "Dirty Nukes" I assume you mean a small Nuclear device that radiates nuclear energy. Using this definition I am confident in saying: 1. Iran most likely would not use a dirty nuke. 2. New York would probably not be a high target as they would strike at US targets in the middle east. Recently Iranian Religious leaders said that they would strike back at US interests world wide if the US took military action against Iran.

In reality any terrorist can do anything they want in this country if they truely wish to do it. New York City is only as safe as it was the day before 911. It's a price we all pay for living in a free society.
