Generally it's good to start when your period starts because starting at a different time in your cycle changes your hormone levels more intensely than starting while on your period. This can make you spot blood even though it's not the right time of the month and have unpleasant PMS-like symptoms. If you were using it to prevent pregnancy, it also keeps the pill from being effective for the first week or so.

If you're keen to get started before your period begins, it's okay. Just be aware and maybe carry some extra pads so you don't have any little incidents.

If you are taking BC's for acne, I don't see why you would stop when your period starts. How old are you?
Pills are made to last 21 days. At this point, your cycle should start shortly. This is the time that you will take the last seven pills. When you use your last pill, you will begin a new pack immediately the next day (even if you are not done with your cycle yet). This method will eventually regulate your cycle as well as your hormones (the acne part). The pills should be taken consecutively without missing one. Should you miss one, follow the insert directions.
