I just bought my first car and went to Sainsburys forecourt to put some petrol in it, I was supposed to choose the green handle but got five pounds worth of the red handle which was lead replacement i think. I drove 20 odd miles home but should i syphon off the rest? or will it be ok?
thanks

I think it should be ok. If im remember correctly its ok to put leaded or lead replacement in an unleaded car but not the other way around. Actualy i heard recently that its a good idea to add alittle lead additive to unleaded vehicles once in a while.

But probably the best thing to do to be safe is to fill the rest of your tank up with unleaded petrol so as to dilute the lead replacement as much as possible. And then after the tanks gone down alittle top it up again and so on till its likely that the £20 of lead replacement is gone.

Good luck.

Fill ur tank right up and drive approx 50 miles then top up again, do this 3 or 4 times to dilute the two fuels and this should hopefully clear it, otherwise if u feel uneasy drain tank, especially if car is pretty new. £5 worth of petrol aint much so by filling ur tank up ur diluting both fuels. get some advice from ur maindealer.

No it will be ok, either run it off or add some unleaded to dilute it. At the worse the only thing that may hapen is the engine may pink under pressure but that won't harm it.

Did you not think it was odd that the nozzle wouldn't fit into your car?
The filler neck is purposly sized to only take an unleaded nozzle.
The problem with foolproof devices like this is the designers underestimated the fools using them.

This is really easy. Forget it. Just act like it never happened. The lead in leaded gasoline is primarily used to cool the valves and valve seats. The valves and seats in vehicles using unleaded fuel don't require any lead for cooling. All done.

Cheers.

If you are worried add more unleaded (green handle)to dilute, but should be ok , as you have driven a good distance since your error.

No worries, tetraethyl lead is no longer added to petrol, thats what kills catalytic converters, the clue is in "lead replacement".just carry on as normal.

Even if you put unleaded in a car that needs lrp, provided its a one off,it probably won't cause any harm.
