The Great Depression was an economic condition of high unemployment, bank failures, home and farm foreclosures, massive business failures, and a climate of fear and hopelessness. President Roosevelt's New Deal was an economic program and a solution to the economic problem and chaos. He restored cofidence in the American economic and financial institutions. The New Deal iniatiated a series of measures for economic relief, recovery, and reform.
Unemployment compensation bought relief to unemployed workers until they could find jobs. The Civilian Conservation Corps gave youth an opportunity to work and was a measure to help save our environment. The Agricultural Adjustment Act helped family farmers and the National Industrial Relations Act set codes for business and created a partnership among business, workers, and the government. Other measures such as the Works Progress Administration provided much needed jobs. As the nation was recovering from the depression by these measures, much needed reform such as the Social Security Act for the elderly and our senior citizens came into being to provide an income after their retirement.
By 1936, the recovered nation rewared our president with 523 electoral votes and later re-elected him to an unprecedented third and fourth terms.
