The Jackson Chameleon is a good lizard for a pet. They're the ones with the funny, independently aimed eyes.

While some individuals probably become conditioned to enjoy being held, I don't think many lizards start out that way. One of my friends rescued an iguana that thrashed and disliked being held. But my friend kept trying, and eventually that iguana became friendly and liked to be petted/held. He would even lean into a scratch like a cat ^_^
I would try working with your iguana more....though it's true, not all of them can be conditioned like my friend's above. Try doing a search for Melissa Kaplan and iguanas. She's the iguana guru.

If you already know this then great, but if not here is some helpful info on Iguanas:
They should be feed:
45% leafy greens such as escarole, dandelions, endive, mustard, and collards, NO lettuces or spinach! They aren't good for him.
45% hard mixed veggies such as an orange flesh squash the harder the better(acorn,pumpkin,butternut... fresh green beans, fresh peas, parsnip, and green bell peppers, NO broccoli or cauliflower, or avocado!
10% fruit such as figs, papaya, mango, pear, and berries. NO bananas, only very rarely as a treat.
NO ANIMAL PROTEIN such as bugs, meat, eggs, or cheese!
Temperature:
They need a basking area of 95-100 and normal temps of 75-85. NO heat rocks!
Lights:
They need a 5.0 UV light.
Hydration:
They should also get baths everyday or so. And should have a water bowl in their cage.
Vet:
You should take Your Iguana for regular vet checkups to make sure it is in good health. Reptiles can have internal parasites that can harm them so you should make sure the vet checks that.
Here are some good sites, the first one was recomended by my vet.

I would suggest a bearded dragon and I would go so far as to say that the other people who say that no lizard likes to be held have obviously never had a bearded dragon. I have 2 adults and 4 babies left from the last clutch that my female layed, every one of them enjoy being held and when they see me or my son they scratch at the side of their enclosure to come out, in esscence to be held.

Individuals of any species will have their own personalities, but I would suggest you look into getting a bearded dragon, leopard or crested gecko, or uromastyx.
A bearded would get to about 20" and would like heat (105o, higher for juveniles) and a strong UVB light. The eat insects and veggies. Life span is 5-15 yrs.
A leopard gecko is 8-10 inches, needs heat, but no UVB (they're nocturnal), and eats insects (occassional pinkies for adults). Life span can be 15-25 years. Cresteds are similar, but can live at room temperatures and should have some UVB. They are also jumpers, so be careful handling.
A uromastyx likes it HOT (120-130o basking area), is sensitive to humidity (don't keep a water bowl with them), eats veggies, and needs strong UVB. These range from 14-30 inches depending on species and live for about 30 yrs.
Do not get a chameleon - these are fun to watch, don't like handling, and are very difficult to keep!
Here are some websites where you can look at more detailed care info for the species I've suggested:

You might want to try the bearded dragon. That might be the best you can find for a lap lizard. It's not really in the lizards nature to be held though.
