I see some of the visitors here are asking dopey questions about being a smurf; indicative that the emerging generation who is well connected to the golbal village via the net and claims to be all about shaping the planet is, at least here, clueless or not very serious. SO HERE IS A SERIOUS QUESTION. I teach. Lets see if you have an answer that works. It is a yes or no answer so it is pretty easy to get it right. If you answer NO, the planet dies as do billions of people (first hint) and if you answer YES and are lying, the planet and people all die anyway so don't bother. WILL YOU SPEND FIVE MINUTES TODAY TO END GLOBAL POVERTY, DISEASE AND WAR? If yes, then what will you do? Please respond here. Here are some ideas: will you collect used computers for 1 - 5 days and then create a fund raiser (tin can) for 1 to 5 days and collect the money required to send the PCs to a distant school in a remote location? Will you learn about alternative energy and how wind power makes water? What?

YES and NO.

YES: Well, ending global poverty is everyone's responsibility. From the fanatical suicide bomber to the warmongering politician, everyone is expected to do his/her part. We can pitch in, in our own little ways (cheesy, huh?). I, for one, am a member of Solar Generation. It's an internnational youth organization forwarding alternate sources of energy, like wind and solar power.

NO: FIVE minutes is too short to make a difference. The only thing I can think of is momentarily switching off your electricity; the French pulled that off quite well. I'm not sure with Americans, with all their insatiable need for energy. But I digress.

Making changes, let alone the initiative, is far from easy. But we need to make effort, no matter how inconvenient they may be.

Recently back from Latin America, I've seen poverty. And I-ve seen one of the causes. Textile companies such as Gildan and Tommy Hilfiger are paying their workers the generous sum of $100 monthly. My letters to politicians about this are a drop in the bucket unless more people do the same. We need a flood of letters to politicians in Canada and the USA, insisting they put a stop to this abuse. (For instance, they could heavily tax any products that are clearly a result of salary abuse). In the country I was visiting, $350 monthly would barely feed a person. $800 could give a barely acceptable lifestyle.

If 10% of the average $907 that Americans spent on Christmas gifts went to children in need, 42 million children could be helped for an entire year according to statistics provided to me during an interview with World Vision.

This year, I conducted an experiment, and asked for donations to World Vision and Heifer.org instead of Christmas gifts. Many folks simply chose to give me gifts anyway, but several did make donations instead, resulting in $137 going to these charities.

I also have a website where I sell art to support these two fine charitable organizations. The next time you need art for your office, church, or home walls, please consider my website. My personal favorite of my own work is Sunset over Florence12. There are two other artists/photographers who are participating on my website with donated works.

why would I want to put an end to the best forms of population control that the earth has in its defense?

sure, lets just take away the ability to form blood clots, and the production of white blood cells, just so that a few people can be happy.

this world would have very few new technological advancements, because without disease and war, we have nothing to fight, no reason to try.

we will become lifeless voids of content, with no drive other than sex and food.

and, with the 6.5 BILLION people on this planet still growing exponentially, you may have to share your home with a complete stranger, a multitude of them actually.

We aren't allowed to require evidence that throwing money at poverty ends it. We are expected to just keep doing it. Our own hard work is supposed to be our own reward and we are supposed to feel guilty for having the wherewithal to acquire a means of earning our own livelihoods. Get with the program! LOL

Great idea about the used PC's! Yep, we subscribe to some mags that help us w/ our alt. energy at home (solar).

Jesus said that before He returned 3 things would take place: 1) gospel to the world 2) "that wicked" be revealed, and 3) "sealing" of attitude in those who wish to be righteous. Yahoo Answers helps with all three. (Jes tellin' the truf.)

Nice question! Yes, I will learn about wind power, clean up, pick up some trash from around where i'm standing (do that regularly) and help my neighbor's kid with homework because his parents don't speak English.
