A Life

As others have mentioned, the only essentials are the Dungeon Masters Guide, the Players Handbook, dice and your imagination. The cardboard screen many use is to cover vital information the players are not supposed to have and reference commonly used tables. If you don't have a dungeon already set up, you might consider purchasing a scenario.

As with many things, it's best if a DM has learned from playing under other good DMs. Of course this isn't always possible.

Good luck, have fun.

A D&D DM needs the players and dungeon master's hanbooks. Also a Monster Manual wouldn't hurt. The cardboard thing is a screen with stats, helps with calculating saving throws.

Also a DM should have a very good imagination, a decent working knowledge of D&D (don't put monsters ina dungeon that can't be found in a dungeon), and a good sense of fair play (make your games fun and rewarding).

AD&D = Advanced Dungeons and Dragons

AD&D has been discontinued and replaced by D&D 3.5. Those books will be much easier to find, althought the rules are more complicated.

Go to the bookstore and get a DM's Guide and a Player's Handbook. then get a set of dice. That is all you really need, but there are a ton of other resources out there. I suggest a few miniatures and a grid map (can be found at a gaming hobby store)

It's called a DM screen, it has all the vital stats you need to quickly refer to on the back, and it screens your players from seeing your dice rolls (great if you want to make things more dramatic). You obviously need the core rule book, and the dungeon masters guide is great too. There are lots of great sites with advise for DM's. You can even get pre-made campaigns, if you want to get used to the system before jumping in and writing your own. Good luck!

Far more important than the screen (the cardboard thing) is the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) and Player's Handbook (PH). These contain all the basic (relatively speaking) rules. And everybody needs a few sets of dice (including d20, d10x2, d8, d6, and d4). Enjoy! :)
