Yes as long as it is the same type of memory. I.E. PC3200, PC4000 etc.

In most cases it will be safe, but you might have a slight performance decrease as your notebook may be able to run with dual-channel mode with two modules the same size.

It all depends on the brand and model of your notebook. Do you have some more information about it? i.e. is a Sony Vaio, HP Presario, ASUS, etc?

You should send email to, or chat with, the laptop manufacturer. Most likely it is safe. My HP by default was sold with 512. But I upgraded. It involved their just dropping in a 512 card, no harm. But I don't know if that's true everywhere!

The biggest things you need to make sure of are the connector and the speed. The manufacturer's support page should tell you which connector type (184 pin or 200 pin) and speed you need. If your new stick is slower than the original, both will operate at the lower speed, as long as it's supported by your motherboard.

Go to www.memorygiant.com and let it scan your computer, and it will tell you exactly what memory is compatible.
