When rear facing your seat will move towards the top of the seat it is normal. You seat should NOT move more than 1in where it is belted in. To get the best install possible kneel in your seat and put ALL of you body weight on the seat when you are installing it. Make sure all the slack is out of the seat belt and lock the belt. This will give a very tight install if done correctly and will not allow for any movement by the belt path.

I would encourage you to find a child safety seat expert in your area. (www.safekids.org, is a site to help you look for one) I would try to stay away from the fire station because not all of them know what they are doing.

Do not take it to your local fire department or Emergency Room. Some of the very worst installations I've ever seen have been cases in which the parent assumed that because a fire fighter or EMT installed the seat, it was correct.

Find a Safe Kids certified Child Passenger Safety Technician using the link below. You'll need you enter your state and zip code to find a CPST near you.

That said, the movement you are describing is normal. It's called "rebound", it's not a safety concern. You do want to verify you have a correct installation, however, as more than 95% of car seats are incorrectly installed.

If I remember correctly you should not be able to move it more than 2 inches in any direction. I always put my knee in the car seat or the bottom that stays in car if you have that kind and push it into seat to get seat belt good and tight. You can also check with your police department, fire station, or dealer in most cases and they can check it for you. I learn the knee trick from my police department when I had my seat checked there. Good luck and hope this helps.

Go to your local police dept. In our area, the police or sheriff's office does a periodic public safety thing where you can come by to have the seat checked but I'm sure if you just went over there, they would be happy to help you.

Excellent question. Statistics show that 90% of all car seats are installed incorrectly - even by "smart people". Did you know you can have a car seat installed professionally for free? Check out this website to search your area. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/childps/Contacts/index.cfm

Take the car and seat to your local Fire Department or closest ER. They will not only put it in correctly but they will gladly show you on how you should exactly put it in.

GOOD LUCK!!

You should be able to go to your local fire house or police station. They can help you there. You shoud not be able to move the carseat more than one inch each way (I think that's what I was told...double check that number with the poliece or fire personnell)

Your local police or fire station where there are certified raters can help you out - just phone ahead to see when the appropriate person is on duty.

Call your local fire station and see if they have a technician that is qualified to check the installation.
