I have high speed internet and only have a laptop. Right now I have the ethernet cable plugged into my laptop. Is there any way to have wireless internet with only one computer in the house?

Assuming your laptop has a wireless card, the only cable you'll need is the one between your high-speed 'modem' and your wireless router. Be sure to enable security and change the router password, or anyone driving by your house can hijack your connection.

Caveat Emptor.

Although not a problem for you because your laptop has a wired network port too, others should be aware that some wireless routers can only be configured the first time by using wired computers! My Buffalo router was like this, I had to go back and and buy a network card and fit it in my desktop PC before I could use the wireless card I originally purchased and to get my laptop working wirelessly (it had no wired LAN port).

A bit like the CD drive I bought once that had installation instructions on a CD.

Or the modem that told me in the manual the URL of the troubleshooting guide.

it doesnt matter how many computers you have. Setup the wireless router according to the instructions and you can run your 1 computer wirelessly.
