I have traveled to 48 of the 50 states and can report that there are wonderful people everywhere you go.

My Father in law likes to tell a story about a traveler walking down the road. Pretty soon he sees another man walking the other direction and so he asks the man about the town that he is about to enter. "How are the people in the town". The man replies "they are the worst people you will ever meet. They are ornery and just about as unfriendly as they can get". The traveler thanks the man and keeps walking. Pretty soon he meets another man walking the other direction and asks him about the people in the town. The man replies "Oh you are going to have a wonderful time in that town. The people are so nice and friendly. You'll love it there."

The point of the story, of course, is that if you are friendly you tend to meet friendly people and vise versa.

In my personal experience the people in Idaho, Wyoming, North Carolina and Texas were very very friendly and exceptionally helpful. I left an overnight bag outside of my car in Wyoming and a person I had never met picked it up and drove after me to return it - but not before inviting me to join them in their annual parade that was going on that same day.

My biggest surprise of all was New York. We were visiting New York City and I was expecting to get mugged or approached by panhandlers but my experience was very different than my expectations. We walked all over downtown and through Central Park and people were very friendly everywhere we went. We were even out fairly late on a couple of nights.

It is a great country, with some very nice people, worth visiting. South Dakota has some of the most fun tourists spots (the Corn Palace, Sturgis during the roundup, the face place - Mount Rushmore, Elvis' bike, and Wall Drug).

Every state has some great surprises and even greater people.
