We really want to see the ruins in Chitzen Itza but have heard the bus trips are a huge drag, take all day and it is really hot. I was thinking that if we could rent a car and make the drive it would be much more tolerable. Has anyone ever done this and do you have any advice for us?
Thanks

It's easy to get lost leaving the main highways on the way to Chitzen Itza. The nice thing about going on a tour bus is that you get all the historical background, see the country side, admission to the ruins is included in the cost, guided tour of the ruins, drink bear, usually a meal and the convenience of not having to drive. It's by no means a short drive from Playa Del Carmen. Bring along a book and a few snacks and enjoy the ride. Think the tour company we've used was Chaza Travel. Forget off the top of my head. Your hotel concierge service can easily hook you up with a good tour company.

PS Once you get into the Yucatan Spanish is not spoken as much Mayan is the native language

I have rented a car and traveled from Cancun ......all the way to Vera Cruz. Made all the stops on the way....and it was the best trip ever. I saw things I have never been able to see before......best decision I have ever made. My advice......rent the car online before you go. Much better rates than waiting until you get there. Check all the websites for the best deals. I think Orbitz usually has some good deals, but there are many others. Travelcity, Hertz, Hotwire....just do a lot of searching and you can find a car for about 12.00 per day......it will cost you from 26.00 - 36.00 per day if you wait until you get to Mexico. Believe me....I just played that game in January of this year. I really would not rent again from Zipp car rental, which is popular in all the resorts. They kinda ripped me off!!!

Once did the car (hopefully things have changed) but I got a VW bug without air for the price of a Cadillac in the USA and
Once , took the ferry to Cozumel and a short plane hop to Chichen Itza . . . the strip is close to the ruins.

my wife and daughter and I rented a jeep at playa and drove to chitzen itza. It was a great trip .we did not have any problems. It was cool that we took the top off the jeep after we left the rental place. the bus trip was $80.00 each. we rented the jeep for $100.00 and to get in to ruins was $8.00 U.S. so for $124.00 plus fuel we got to stop along the way and shop and eat where we wanted.

I took the bus trip and it wasn't a drag at all. We made quite a few stops at other sites I would otherwise not have soon. (An incredible sinkhole that is an underwater well that you can swim in)

The roads from Playa Del Carmen aren't the greatest and they are lined with litter. You would have to drive through some pretty impoverished areas. If you get lost their won't be anyone to give you directions in English.

I would definitely recommend taking the bus trip. Renting a car in Mexico can be a mess and they traffic is really crazy. Plus if you get lost most areas no one speaks English.
