Should we make it compulsory for 16-18 yr olds to spend 12 months doing military service? Would this instill more discipline into the youth of today and make them identify more with the country they live in?

Yes i agree with that
In addition , A further year of ;

compulsery vocational training ( a trade)
would be of great help, in giving youngsters
confidence and future job opportunities.

The people who do not wish ,to continue into the armed services , after initial training
could go on to other vital services
fire service, ambulance service , nursing . , farming engineering etc

The 16-18 year olds must be well cared for, properly fed and clothed and housed.
they will be respected citezens ,given the chance,.
to prove what they are made of .
Far too many kids are allowed to drift ,
with no direction and no hope .( at that age )
No wonder they drift into drink , drugs and worse

All this would cost a lot of money,
Good results nationally ,would be money well spent ,for the future of this country

I think a two year stint in the army would be good for the male youth of this country, they could use all that aggression in working out, and training (only going on active service if signing for it), and many will feel they are more a part of this country than outsiders. It would be a way of gaining self respect and with that pride in themselves.

Not for all of them-just the troublesome ones. Kids that cause trouble, get ASBO's etc should be made to do national service. The discipline would do them good.

I don't think it should be 100% compulsory.

Perhaps if they are unemployed for 6-12 months after leaving education.

And in case you're wondering, yes, even those on a gap year.

Some years back I would have disagreed. Now, with the failure of family (except in Eastenders) to control their offspring, it probably is one of the better ideas proposed so far.
