I think one of the best theories I've heard is that the hatch is actually a black hole and that's why people are drawn to the island but can't leave. (although there are some discrepencies, like why Michael and Walt could leave)
I like this theory a lot more than the purgatory one!
The best part about LOST is all the conspiracy theories!

My first theory was purgatory which still kind of makes sense to me even though there are a few posts on here calling it complete crap. My other theory is that the others are scientists (which we pretty much already know) and were stuck there in a project gone awry; to complete the project they needed new specemins and found a way to crash the plane and get thier new test subjcets. I honestly have no clue anymore. Though the episode when Desmond "went back in time" or what not, I was going with the "It's all a dream" theory. I'm clueless as of now; definitley going to keep watching.

In one episode Desmond is reading The Third Policeman. A story in which the character ends up in an increasingly strange place. There is the inexplicable working of levers in an underground station thing which is considered vital but he is never told why, strange threatening characters and the hope of returning home.
This man has died suddenly and now lives in this purgatory obliviously paying for his sins and believing himself alive. The writers recommended people read the book for a better understanding of the show. Course they then said that it wasn't purgatory...

first of all lets scrap the pergatory theory as the show creators have already rubbished the idea.
The show is brilliant as it always keeps you guessing and the last episode asked even more questions!
Nobody will get the theory correct lets just wait and see what happens!

i think that , when they got on the plane, they where rended unconcious, and are being fed the problems to see how they cope and are being monitored, by whoever, for what reason i dont know, and because they are all a bit sussy, it dosn't matter if the experiment goes wrong

They are in pergatory. Every time one of them comes to terms with his or her problem, they die.
