There are many definitions of the word salute. Some are-
1. toast: propose a toast to; "Let us toast the birthday girl!"; "Let's drink to the New Year"
2.greet in a friendly way; "I meet this men every day on my way to work and he salutes me"
3.express commendation of; "I salute your courage!"
4.an act of honor or courteous recognition; "a musical salute to the composer on his birthday"
5.become noticeable; "a terrible stench saluted our nostrils"
6.a formal military gesture of respect
In pyrotechnics a salute is a device primarily designed to make a loud report (bang), rather than have a visual effect, although most salutes will also have a very bright flash and may have titanium added for a cloud of sparks (titanium salute). The salute may be fired on the ground (ground salute) or launched from a mortar as a shell (aerial salute). Due to the nature of the effect, large salutes are some of the more hazardous fireworks.
