does anyone know how these .99 stores are able to sell stuff so cheap, in particular food like chicken, milk and cheese, i can see a lot of the other stuff coming from china but how are they able to obtain perishables to sell so cheap?

The packaging and the volume. Brand name whole chicken goes on sale for 49-59 cents per pound and the chicken weighs in at three pounds. So they sell half a nonbrand chicken for .99 and make twenty cents plus whatever the store was making at .49. Plus the nonbrand profit.
I used to run a retail/contractor store and it cost about 17% and all else was my profit.

A lot times stores will purchase damaged or nearly expired goods from other retailers or from the distribution center at extremely discounted prices. That's why the products at salvage stores are sometimes dirty--- they could be from a flooded or smoke damaged building or damaged during transport.

they also buy overstocks that just didn't sell elsewhere, or stuff from bankruptcies, etc. I personally would tend to stay away from food items
