If so, can a contract be drawn up to completely make this impossible?

Thanks for the answers, I actually don't even have a gf so I won't be getting married, It's just a question I've wanted to know the answer to for a long time. Personally though I think that this rule shouldn't be a part of marriage anyway, why isn't it the other way around It's unfair, so it shouldn't exist.

That's called a pre-nuptial agreement.

so, let's get this clear, you are old enough to be thinking about marriage, old enough to have assets you are not willing to share with the woman you supposedly want to spend the rest of your life with and that would obviously make you old enough to know about attorneys but...you have never heard of a pre nup?

Don't get married. You aren't ready. You are looking at your possible marriage as a gamble and you are already trying to hedge your bets. Put yourself in the woman's place and ask yourself if you would want to marry someone who thought as you are thinking.

Wait until you find a girl you are willing to give everything to, your heart, your money, your future and your life, then propose. Until then, don't even think about marriage. Whe you find the right woman you will want to race her down the aisle, and you will do anything to get her to meet you at the altar.

Better luck next time dude.

No it's not unfair...All marital assets are split 50/50 what is unfair about that? If the wife earns more than the husband (happened to me and my ex more often than not) and she pays into a retirement account (401) her husband get's half of everything and she get's half of his...nothing unfair about it. But of course being a male it WOULD seem unfair to you because your ego would be bruised as well. I suggest that before you get married you have your fiance sign a prenup...

Prenups do NOT always hold up in court, especially if children are involved. If you think you need a prenup agreement... DON'T GET MARRIED. Anyone who goes into marriage with the idea that a divorce will follow needs to save his/her $2.00!

Usually. As for the contract, yes, it is called a pre nup. Although, to me, those show mistrust in her and if I was ever asked to sign one, I would have walked away. A GOOD marriage is about LOVE, not money.

In most states, the wife is entitled to half of all marital assets. To prevent this, you need to get a Pre-nuptial agreement.

I would never do that, because this shows that i don't trust her and the relationship may break at any point in the future. I would just marry her and keep the relationship as long as I die.

You are talking about a prenuptial agreement and it should be drawn up by a lawyer.
