I always understood the snake on any medical device (symbol, shield, etc) to represent the snake Moses put on the pole in Numbers. After the Israelites had been bitten, all they had to do was look at the pole with the snake (exercise faith) and they would be healed.

what does the snake and the shield mean on the Blue Cross Blue Shield emblem?

The single snake upon a staff is indicative of the Rod of Asclepius. (two snakes are a caduceus) It symbolizes medicine and the authority of learned healers. The shield is a shield of protection. Originally, the cross was used for hospital coverage with the insurance company, while the shield was other medical coverage.

Please note that wikipedia is sorely out of date. Blue Cross Blue Shield merged with Wellpoint in 2005 and is now under their name.

The snake wrapped around a winged staff is actually a medical symbol called a caduceus. The shield itself is the "Blue Shield."

I believe the snake came from the ancient symbol for physicians - usually it's two snakes. Something to do Hyppocrates (remember the Hyppocratic Oath?). The shield -- symbolic.

Yes, they are happy. Here is what it all boils down to: The goal of the Democratic party is to have a the government involved in everything. In a perfect world things would run smoothly and our government would do a great job. We are so far from perfect that if it were a star the light would still need about 5,000 more years to reach earth. This is such a hardcore Democratic administration that it's actually more Liberal-Socialist. The primary goal of Obama and his compatriots in the House, Senate and Congress are to indeed create a single payer system to control our health care. When our insurance premiums continue to rise in order for the companies to compete with the crappy government care and the low rates you will see many people having to abandon private insurance and adopt the government's plan. Remember, the more people on the government's plan means more tax dollars needed to pay for said plan. Eventually there will be less people on private insurance and their premiums will continue to rise, and in addition, their taxes will greatly increase to help pay for the many more people switching to the gov't option. Eventually everyone will have no choice but to rely on the government plan because no one will be able to afford anything else. Still our taxes will remain sky high. The government is trying to create a permanent welfare state which we all could eventually succumb to. We do not want this because then they truly will control our lives. This is not about health care, it is about controlling the American people. This is one ugly step in that dreaded direction. What people forget is that WE, the voters, have the power to steer our country in the way we want. Call out the dirty politicians, especially those who are funded by lobbyists. Vote them out of office. The reason the government is afraid of (yes, afraid) alliances like the Tea Party is because when voters get together and look at the facts (like a Jury) they realize the crap on the media was crap and they are able to make serious decisions and can move forward with making things right. This isn't about which party you voted for anymore. This is about our freedoms, what makes this country great, about taking our country back. Peace.

The snake does not signify the "fiery" serpent of Moses. Rather, it signifies the symbol that was used for the worship of Ascelpius (The Greek God of Healing). If you wanted healing in Pergamum, you would spend the night at the Asclepius Temple. There you would sleep in a room where snakes slithered around you all night. Then, based upon your dreams that night, you would share it with the priest. The priest would then interpret your dream and prescribe a remedy for your healing. Thus, the rod with the snake wrapped around it symbolized the God of Healing. Just research Asclepius with its symbol and there you will see the exact same logo which has its roots in idolatry, not Jesus.
