They can shut down your power (my brother's was shut down in December, so yes, they can turn it off in the winter months) but if you speak with them and explain your problems, they will most likely work out a payment plan or actually be able to find assistance for your. If you call your local assistance places such as Goodwill, they will often help you with your bills. You may also contact the state and they may be able to help you too. Hope that helps. Sometimes we can't help our situations that we get into, especially when it concerns a young child. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and my husband and I are still trying to figure out what we are going to do financially because daycare is so expensive but we can't afford our mortgage without both of our paychecks.

Just call the electric company and tell them your plight. They should be able to work something out with you. I don't think they can turn it off, but you will still owe the money, and they may add late fees. Our community has a place on our bills where you can contribute money to help others who cannot pay their bill. Maybe there is a fund where you live and they might put some of that into your account to help out. Another thing to consider: call United Way and ask if there is any help to pay for your utilities.

No - I know for a fact that your electric company CANNOT shut you off between the months of November and April regardless if you have a child. They know you need heat and electricity to survive in the cold winter months. Good luck to you. I hope you can get ahead with your bills. I know it can be hard.

It's not true. If the company doesn't get paid, they have every right to shut off the electricity under the law. Sorry.

I think there is a time frame it's either till March or April...you may not have to prove you have a baby, I think it's a law for everyone. Call a local legal facility to get the correct low down on it.

If you use electric to heat your home, they can't. However, If you are using natural gas as a heat source, they can turn your electric off. Having a baby doesn't matter to them.

They can but most don't. You need to contact your Electric Company and discuss your situation with them.
