Do u have to know how to float in the water before you can scuba dive.

I'm going to Catalina Island and they offer all the training and stuff, but I dont know if you have to know how to float before you start the training.

I can swim from one side of the pool to another but for some reason i just never learned how to float.

Oh heck no. You'll be able to float with your SCUBA gear. One of the air lines from your tanks goes to the vest that your tank is attached to. You control your buoyancy (whether you go up or down in the water) with a regulator valve attached to the vest. If you want to go down, you push a button to dump air out of the vest and you'll sink. If you want to go back up, you push another button to let air into the vest and you'll start ascending. They'll teach you all of that when you go to training.

Being able to swim is not necessary in order to Scuba Dive, but, its highly desirable. You should feel at home in the water. Most dive training programs include life saving drills, inadequate swimmers find this difficult and exhausting. Your statement that you can swim from one side of the pool to the other indicates low level water skills. My advice is to spend more time in the pool to develop your swimming skills before taking on a Dive training course or programme. You will be able to really enjoy diving if you are properly prepared and trained and confident in your ability. remember also that you will be diving with a 'buddy' and his/her safety will be in your hands when underwater.

During my scuba certification at the YMCA the instructor said that it is not necessary to know how to swim to be able to scuba dive. I found that with all the gear on it is difficult to move around in the water without the aid of fins. We had to be able to tread water for five minutes, throw our mask in 12 feet of water dive in for it and put it on and clear it while remaining underwater, and buddy breath. If you are at ease in deep water, you should be fine.

If you take a PADI course in diving they require that you can swim proficiently - and you have to be able to treadwater for a few minutes. Quick dive courses at resorts with instructors however usually don't have the same requirements. But if you can swim, you can float - you just don't know it yet.

Go enjoy your SCUBA course and have a great trip!

you will be fine if you can swim. Your wetsuit will give you enough buoyancy to float if it is a 3mm. When they go through the mask on snorkel skills, you will probably be able to float then. Not too tricky, I am sure you will be fine.
